    About Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121–180 AD) was Roman Emperor from 161 until his death, celebrated in history as the last of the 'Five Good Emperors' and the supreme exemplar of the Platonic 'philosopher-king.' Governing Rome during an era of relentless military conflict along the Danubian frontier and devastating outbreaks of the Antonine Plague, Marcus Aurelius steadfastly shouldered the immense burdens of imperial rule with stoic fortitude, justice, and self-restraint. During his military campaigns in modern-day Austria and Hungary, he penned Meditations, an intimate series of private spiritual journals written in Koine Greek for his own moral guidance and reflection. Drawing heavily on Stoic principles from Epictetus, Meditations provides an immortal roadmap for navigating adversity, mastering emotional impulses, accepting the transient nature of mortal existence, and fulfilling one's duty to the broader cosmopolitan community. His candid introspective wisdom remains one of the most widely read, practical philosophical guides in human history.
