    About Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad (1857–1924), born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in modern-day Ukraine to Polish aristocratic patriots, was a novelist and master stylist who became one of the greatest writers in English literature despite not learning the language until his twenties. Following sixteen adventurous years as a merchant seaman and officer sailing the Mediterranean, the Orient, and the Congo River, Conrad retired from the sea to dedicate himself to writing in rural England. His maritime experiences provided the evocative backdrop for psychologically intense, morally complex masterpieces including Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, and The Secret Agent. Conrad’s fiction dismantled nineteenth-century imperialist triumphalism, exposing the moral hypocrisy, cultural disorientation, and existential dread lurking behind modern European civilization. Employing innovative narrative techniques such as nested perspectives, frame narrators like Charles Marlow, and fractured chronology, Conrad stood as a pivotal bridge between Victorian realism and twentieth-century modernism.
